This map displays the flood hazards for the Maplewood Subdivision in Manhattan, Kansas. The dark green represents the 100-year floodplain while the light green represents the 500-year floodplain. This map would most commonly be used by a homeowners insurance agency to determine which properties are likely to suffer economic damages from flooding. This map could also be used for mitigation to minimize future economic losses.

This map represent the total dollar value of damage to the land and buildings in the 1993 Flood in Manhattan, Kansas. The map displays which parcels of land have what amount of damage. The yellow color represents the parcels of land that recieved minimal damage while the red color represents a higher value in damage. This map would be used by numerous officials and agencies to assesss the damage, allocate resources, and plan mitigation efforts.

Hurricane Katrina


This map displays the three Southern counties of Mississippi along the Gulf Coast and the land cover of the areas that were flooded by the 15 foot storm surge during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The bar graph to the left of the map depicts the percentage of land and type of land cover that was flooded. As you can see the areas that were drastically affected by the flooding were wetlands and waterways. Only 2.5% of developed areas and 7.9% of the agriculture within these counties were affected.


This map depicts the land that was flooded by the stoirm surge during Hurricane Katrina as well as some of the infrastructure that was affected. The infrastructure on this map includes major roadways, railroads, and hospitals and churches that may require rescue and supplies. This map could be used to determine extent of damage and/or to prioritize resource allocations.
