Hurricane Katrina

This map displays the three Southern counties of Mississippi along the Gulf Coast and the land cover of the areas that were flooded by the 15 foot storm surge during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The bar graph to the left of the map depicts the percentage of land and type of land cover that was flooded. As you can see the areas that were drastically affected by the flooding were wetlands and waterways. Only 2.5% of developed areas and 7.9% of the agriculture within these counties were affected.

This map depicts the land that was flooded by the stoirm surge during Hurricane Katrina as well as some of the infrastructure that was affected. The infrastructure on this map includes major roadways, railroads, and hospitals and churches that may require rescue and supplies. This map could be used to determine extent of damage and/or to prioritize resource allocations.
